Why aftercare determines your salon's keratin results
The same treatment, applied the same way, can last 6 weeks or 6 months — the difference is what the client does at home. Salons that hand every keratin client a clear aftercare protocol see longer-lasting results, better reviews, and more referrals. Here is a protocol you're welcome to adapt and share with your clients.
The first 72 hours
- Follow your stylist's guidance on when to first wash — modern formaldehyde-free systems are more forgiving than legacy treatments, but the set period still matters.
- Keep hair dry, straight, and down: no ponytails, clips, tucking behind ears, or sunglasses on the head.
- If hair gets wet or creased, blow-dry and lightly flat-iron as soon as possible.
The daily routine (months 1–6)
- Sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner only. Sulfates strip the smoothing complex faster than anything else.
- Wash less often — 2–3 times per week is ideal; use dry shampoo between washes.
- Rinse after pools and ocean swimming. Chlorine and salt accelerate fade; a leave-in conditioner before swimming helps.
- Use heat protectant before blow-drying or ironing.
- Sleep smart: a silk or satin pillowcase reduces friction and morning frizz.
What to avoid
- Clarifying and anti-dandruff shampoos (deep-cleansing formulas strip treatment).
- Salt sprays and high-alcohol styling products.
- Coloring services too soon — follow your stylist's timing guidance.
When to rebook
Book the next smoothing service at 12–16 weeks, before visible regression at the hairline and crown. Clients who rebook on schedule maintain continuously smooth hair — and salons that pre-book at checkout keep their keratin chairs full.
For salons: make aftercare part of the service
Print this protocol as a card or send it by text after every service. It takes two minutes and protects a $250–$350 result. For the treatment side of longevity — formula strength, boosters, and technique — see How Long Does a Keratin Treatment Last? and the YUDIVA Booster™.
